Tips for Preparing for your Session

If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve seen a photo of yourself in an outfit that looked fantastic in the mirror but realized that it didn’t translate well to being photographed. My biggest advice is to make sure your outfits are true to who you are, and your personalities will shine through. Here are my top tips for preparing for your session and picking the best outfits!

1 .Wear something you’re comfortable in, that is YOU. You want to show off your personalities and feel like yourself. We’ll also likely be moving around quite a bit so think about wearing comfortable shoes. If it’s new, make sure to try it on beforehand so you know how it feels. For my littlest clients, comfort first! The happier they are, the more likely they will be to have a great time during the session.

2. I recommend subdued patterns, textures, and earth tones in your clothing choices. Plaids, stripes, and florals photograph great! If someone in your party is wearing a pattern, I recommend the others wearing coordinating solids to keep the image from being too busy.

3. Feel free to bring options! A couple different shirts, cardigans or outfits is totally OK and gives your images more variety. Some couples like to do one look that’s more dressy and one that’s more casual, and some families bring a couple of accessories or layers to change things up. Just keep in mind the time to change may cut into your session time.

4. Check out some example sessions on my website and Instagram beforehand so you have a better idea of what to expect. This will help lessen your nerves going into the session.

5. Make a special evening out of it! Plan to grab a bite to eat after and keep the fun going, take the family out for ice-cream, plan to play on the beach afterward. I’d love for you to think back on the whole experience when you look at the photos and remember what a special day it was.

6. Try to relax and remember… your job is not to model, it’s to have fun and love on each other! My job is to make you look amazing and capture the genuine moments of connection. For my families- it is totally normal for your session to feel chaotic! I’ve seen it all and I have three boys so I’m no stranger to the feeling. I will guide you and your family through prompts and poses designed to evoke natural smiles and all it takes is one snap (out of the hundreds I will take!) to capture the perfect moment between the craziness. Just relax and focus on having fun with your kids and the rest will follow!
